1 Year At OpTempo

Fireworks Celebration!

I let the first anniversary of OpTempo pass without a mention since it’s been rather hectic with all I’m trying to do so I’ll make it up one day late.

One year ago, on October 6 2007, I started posting on OpTempo. My original goal was to post 200 articles during the month. I reached this goal, just barely. It was a learning experience. My intention was to follow trends like Vic was doing with his blog at the time but I was still confused about the difference between blogging for search traffic and blogging for social traffic. As a result, only a few posts got search traffic although I did get some social traffic.

I was also trying to figure out a monetization pattern that would work. It was frustrating because, as you probably know, blogs with only social traffic don’t make much money with a few exceptions. I kept experimenting with different methods. Dumping Adsense was probably the best move I made since having it here eventually resulted in my account getting smart priced. Later I came up with my Big Honkin’ Ads concept and later followed it up with my review/EPN post method which is when this blog really began to earn money.

Somewhere along the way I started seeing this blog get a lot of authority in a number of areas and thus a lot of good search traffic. This has been the key to OpTempo earning money and I have ideas from Vic and Griz to thank for that.

Where am I going to take OpTempo in the future? Well, I’ve already changed directions with it a few times so I suspect that there will be other changes in store as time goes on. I haven’t posted here as much recently since I’ve been kicking off at least one new site a day plus working on Blog Content Wizard updates and support. However, I do plan to keep this site going. As one of my favorite Sci-Fi characters, Hoban ‘Wash’ Washburn of Firefly, said, “I’m a leaf on the wind, watch how I soar”.

Anyway, here are some of my favorite, and most popular, articles out of the 527 articles I’ve posted here over the past year:

The Secret Guide to Social Blogging Success is a 6 part series that takes a semi-serious/semi-satirical look at “Make Money Online” social blogging.

I’ve created several niche blogs on Blogger over the past year. Here are my most comprehensive articles on doing this.

On the general topic of niche blogging I’ve written several articles, both how to’s and theoretical ones. I like this one the best since it answers the “Why create a niche search marketing blog” and other questions often brought up by social bloggers: Arte Moreno’s Niche Blogging Lessons.

On a personal note, I have blogged about our pets, such as our Maine Coon Cat and our Blue & Gold Macaw and some of my favorite TV shows like Burn Notice and Lost. I’ve also mentioned movies from time to time in posts like these Top 10 Dark Science Fiction Movies and Watch Old Movies for Free.

There’s a lot of other content around here on OpTempo of all different types and I hope to add more over the next year. I hope you enjoy it. Thanks to all of you who read OpTempo regularly and a special thanks to all those visitors from Google who read part of one post and move on. ;)

Thanks Steve,

It’s funny. When this blog was new 85% of my traffic was from referral sources such as other blogs and StumbleUpon. Now between 90-95% of the traffic is from Google. As a result, even without posting at all for two weeks, the traffic level remained almost the same and the earnings were stable.

It’s great when you realize that fact. I never liked writing or blogging so now I just get people to write stuff for my niche sites. I can go away for a couple of weeks and G is still sending me traffic that clicks on my ads. Middlebrook can keep her rush of traffic as far as I’m concerned!

Firefly was a SWEET series. How that ever got cancelled after one year I will never know.

Hi Bruce,

Believe it or not, I only discovered Firefly this year. I didn’t know what I was missing. Word-of-mouth is how people hear about it. It’s too bad the network execs didn’t give it a chance. My only gripe was Wash getting killed in the movie. :(

He what? ;)

In the course of this year you’ve both learned a lot and passed on a lot. You’ve been a great help and source of information. If you could help me with my laziness problem I’d be sure to be a success. :)

Hi JL,

It’s been quite a ‘journey’ although I hate that term when it comes to blogging because it gets overused so much.

Thanks Frank: its interesting to see that how the “master plan ” developed LOL. One thing I know for sure is that Google LOVES your blog, you are the best source of anchored links around - and you are fun to read !

Hi Lissie,

I’m just glad I found Griz and Vic along the way.

Google does seem to like this blog for some reason (example, Google on littermaid automatic litter box). I wish I knew the secret formula but I don’t. It must be the content. ;)

oh content is king as always Frank LOL

Hi JR,

I don’t have time to do it all. That’s why I didn’t have a post here for about 2 weeks. ;)

Congrats Frank,

I always find your site interesting, and always watch what your doing next! I must admit I was surprised when I did the web site review at the keywords you were known for.

Here’s to a fantastic second year!

Hi Lamach,

I’ve almost gotten where I view this blog as a collection of mini-sites rather than a blog. For example, if you do a ‘view source’ you’ll find that the H1 tag is the title of the post, not of the blog. I also try to link build on a post by post basis as well.

Hi Frank! Congratulations on your 1yr Blog Birthday. That is a great achievement. A lot of blogs never make it this far, let alone produce this amount of content. I appreciate your site and I look forward to getting to know you more at the Academy.

Take care and keep up the good work!

You have truly found your voice here and as your reader for quite some time now I have truly enjoyed experiencing this growth with you.

Thanks for sharing your journey!

Hey Frank,

A little late to congratulate you but congrats just the same. Your site may well be the best example of a successful multi-niche site I have seen. The fact the G loves you has given me ideas that I previously thought wouldn’t work - wrong - I have learned something new this year and you are to thank for that.

Keep it up and hope next year is even better.

(Don’t you love not having to post all the time - nothing better than passive income! ;-) )

Hi Griz,

I think part of what makes it work is that I started trying to treat each page as a mini-site and link build on it specifically rather than the domain as a whole. That’s also why the H1 on each page is the post title rather than the blog title. The downside is that I do lose 1st page position over time if there is competition vs. what you’ll see on a more focused niche blog.

Keep up the good work. Here’s to another year!

Hello Frank,

I’ve been reading OpTempo for a few months now but have never commented. Why? I don’t know, but I guess it’s because there’s always so much to read/learn/do that commenting seems to take a back seat.

Through your site, I’ve found Griz and others and having just commented on Griz’s blog for the first time, I figured I should introduce myself over here as well.

I’ve learned a lot here about many things internet/business/money-related and for that I truly thank you.

Congratulations on your anniversary (even if I am a little late to the party…) and I wish you many more anniversary’s, sites, and articles to come!
