Netgear WPN824 RangeMax MIMO Wireless Router Review

The Netgear WPN824 RangeMax Mimo Wireless Router is a newer wireless router that uses the high performance MIMO technology. The question with this device, as with any wireless router, is how well does it perform so far as speed, ease of setup, interference resistance and range and reliability go. Let’s take a look at these factors, shall we?

review continues below…

So far as setup goes the Netgear WPN824 RangeMax MIMO Wireless Router is rather easy to work with. The setup is web based so it’s operating system independent. Some people have reported the setup program not understanding their network and Internet connection type when using the wizard so using the advanced setup options might be a good idea. Other typical router configuration options like security and IP blocking are also available in the configuration settings.

Speed wise the Netgear WPN824 RangeMax MIMO Wireless Router is very fast. I’d have to say that it isn’t quite as fast as a direct connection to your cable modem but it doesn’t seem like it’s lagging when watching videos or when online gaming. I have heard that its speed performance isn’t that great with older 802.11b networks so you may want to upgrade that at the same time you purchase a Netgear WPN824 Wireless Router.

When we look at the factors of interference resistance and range the Netgear WPN824 RangeMax MIMO Wireless Router does quite well. The unit has 7 internal antennas. They yield a very good range plus they seem to have a strong level of resistance to outside interference. Having had many problems in the past with cordless phones and other home monitoring devices as well as out neighbors’ wireless networks this was a nice feature of the Netgear WPN824 Wireless Router.

Reliability is always a question when it comes to Netgear products. While I’ve had good luck, so far, with the Netgear WPN824 RangeMax MIMO Wireless Router, I have had problems in the past with some of their other products. Some people have reported mystery router crashes and so forth and lack of support from Netgear. If you are a wireless networking novice you might want to enlist some geeky help with this router.

Some people have mentioned the bright blue blinking lights on this unit. Since my Netgear WPN824 RangeMax MIMO Wireless Router is tucked away in the house wiring closet, this isn’t a problem for me but if you want to set it near your computer this might be a consideration for you.

The bottom line on the Netgear WPN824 RangeMax MIMO Wireless Router is that it’s a very good high performance wireless router that has a few quirks but no real showstoppers.

I’ve usually chosen other brands for my routers, but this review of the Netgear WPN824 RangeMax MIMO Wireless Router has definitely put it on my list for the next time I need a new one.

My house has some odd dead spots for wireless coverage, so I’m interested in anything that will improve the reception I get. If the Netgear WPN824 RangeMax MIMO Wireless Router can help me with that, I’d find that very helpful.

Netgear WPN824 RangeMax MIMO Wireless Routers sound very good … but my tech support guy is a big fan of D-Link gear. He weaned me off of Belkin which was what I used to have.

I’ll suggest that he takes a look at Netgear next time I need some equipment.
