New Month - Time For Some Changes

New Month - Time For Some Changes

I’ve been kicking around what I want to do with OpTempo for a while. I’ve been concentrating over the past couple of months on developing niche blogs and doing other work and I haven’t posted here as often as I did in the first 3 months of operation. I’ve been trying to decide the direction I want to take with it. Should I continue onward with about 5-10 posts a month primarily on niche blogging, knowing that Vic and Griz probably have already said it all, or should I go back to my original plan of writing both social/blogging posts and search engine friendly posts?

Well, I’ve decided to go back to my original objective of developing a flagship blog around a number of topics that interest me, which does include niche blogging among other things.

Why a Flagship Blog?

Flagship Brand

Or, why not just build a bunch of money making niche blogs? First of all, I won’t stop doing that. I’ll still be building and developing niche blogs with ‘attractive’ black backgrounds and neon green text. However, I do like some of the social aspects of blogging and OpTempo has been a good platform for this. One of the constraints I wanted to get away from in my previous blogging experience was being tied tightly to a particular topic. However, I’ve found that I’ve painted myself back into that corner again, this time doing blog reviews and talking about niche blogs. So, I’m going back to the roots of this site and talk about whatever I want to talk about. Of course, I’ll still have posts on my niche blogging experiences but I’ll also mention other stuff regularly as well.

What About the Free Blog Reviews?

This Offer Expires

I’ve discontinued my Free Blog Review program for now. If you’ve previously requested a review I should have them completed by the end of April. I may reopen the opportunity for free blog reviews at a later date so stay tuned for this.

I will continue to offer Free 125×125 Button Ad rotation to blogs, BANS sites and many other sites. Remember that they’re subject to approval and the traffic isn’t very targeted but, hey, they’re worth what you pay for them.

Totem Pole

I’ll also probably be dropping the Scratchback widget in the next few days and replacing it with something else but I’ve not sure what this will be yet. I’m open to suggestions.

Top Commentators Time!

If you want a link to your blog now is the time to do it. The Top Commentators plugin resets at the start of each month so leave a comment here and anywhere else where this plugin is used like that. Most of the time these links are followed links so don’t miss your chance to build some links quickly and easily. Why not leave a good comment here on OpTempo right now?

I think the novelty of the ScratchBack widget is over. I have seen a real slowdown of those “tipping” me on my blog. I need one more “Tip” to get paid so I hope I get it.

Hi Bruce,

Note that I do allow anchored links in comments here. I’m still shaking my head about some people out there in the Blogosphere that have spam-a-noia and block/moderate/Akismet even good, on-topic, non-anchored-link comments because you have the audacity to have ads on your site

OK, that’s better.

Scratchback is certainly an underperforming asset. At first I got click-thrus from ads I placed but this soon came to a halt after about January, probably after people started putting affiliate links in them regularly. I’ve also noticed fewer clicks out as well from here.

You know I never research or used ScratchBack but it seems it keeps getting added to the list. Crazy I actually came up on a blog that had a BlogRush widget LMAO I thought it would had died by now.

You know Frank with the type of ads it would be really be interested seeing what would happen if you started hitting some trends again.

Pls if you do shoot me an email with the stats ;)

Hi Vic,

What hurts Scratchback goes back to what you say, social referral visitors don’t click on jack squat. If one relied on these visitors to click ads one would be living in a van down by the river.

As for doing trend targeting, this is something I’m going to be working on, Hillary convinced me of that. ;)

So why drop the ScratchBack widget? Is it not performing for you? I see it’s full at $1.00. What we have found is that people who set their tips at less than $5.00 get less tips. Perception=reality. If your tip is less, it must be worth less.

I’d love to hear your more detailed feedback on why you want to drop the widget. We’re having our best month ever. A big blog network just picked up using the widget and we’re going to pay out more in tips this month than in the first 2 months combined.

Hi Jim,

The basic problem here on OpTempo is that I’m giving away a free 125×125 button ad to most bloggers so there is little incentive to buy ad space unless one wants to (a) support this blog, or (b) place an affiliate product ad on a low CTR widget.

Overall, the most significant problem I see with Scratchback is that it’s more of a social, blogger-to-blogger, vehicle than an advertising vehicle. This is mainly due to the rejection mechanism (only approving other socially oriented blogs) and the overpricing of them in relation to the CTR and overall traffic of sites with the widget.

Thanks Grizzly,

Social blogging is fun but I don’t want it to become a time sink like doing a lot of political forum yakking was for me in 2003-2004.

Regardless of what direction you take this blog in the future, you have a nice following of readers including me, so I don’t think you have to worry about what direction to take it.

It wouldn’t matter to me if you wrote about flagship blogs, money making niche blogs, niche blogging experiences, or your fabulous posts on using images in posts. What you do here on Optempo is written in a way not often found, so keep doing what interests you and your readers will follow.

I do enjoy writing and it’s good to hear from you and Griz that you like what I’ve written.

Keep on blogging, we need you. I’ve got so much useful stuff from your blog and really value you opinion in this stuff.

I really thought I could sneak in a link to my Russian scam site by impersonating a Top Commentator on this site. Boy was I wrong! I guess my IP address will be marked as spam now, darn it!

Hey, I resemble that remark! I’ve never seen anybody do that before — what a strange thing to have happened. I can’t believe that I’m notorious enough that I have Russian scammers wanting to be me.

Heck, some days I wake up and I don’t want to be me!
