So here’s the review…
What is splitbrain.org?
According to the ‘personal’ page this is Andreas’ personal site that documents his thoughts and his software projects. He is obviously into Linux, PERL, PHP and other such things so if you are too you will certainly find some of his work interesting. I feel sorry for Andreas because apparently German law requires that he place his phone number on his site. I know that wouldn’t play very well here in the US for several reasons. The site has been around in one form or another since 2001 with blog archives going back to 2002.
The theme used on splitbrain.org is dark blue/black background with blue, gray and white text. This may give the site a little bit of a goth or hacker feel which may be the intent. The theme is two column with a roomy right side sidebar.
I found navigation to be a bit on the weak side although the hard-to-find archive section is good. Perhaps some additional navigation widgets in the sidebar would be helpful. There is a Recent Posts widget on the single post pages. Perhaps a category widget would be nice as well.
Monetization consists of Google Adsense and a PayPal donation widget on the Projects page. I wouldn’t recommend Adsense on a personal blog like this where there is a lot of low converting social traffic although, based on some information he had posted, search engine traffic may offset this to some degree. Plus it tends to show ads for competing software products. I think that Andreas might want to get rid of it unless it is making more than lunch money. If he does keep it, I’d recommend making it stand out a little more since it blends a little too well.
I found the content of splitbrain.org an interesting, eclectic, mix of personal and technical posts. Some of the posts are long, in depth, posts while others are very, very, short. Here are some of the more interesting ones I found.
Here’s the post where I first ran across his site via EntreCard and commented on it, Of Horses, Worms and other Critters. This one talks about his battle with a virus infested XP system that belonged to a relative.
In Entrecard Sucks? he weighs in on the quality of traffic debate surrounding this widget.
Music for your Blog: Free Playlist Services is a good comparison list of music services that you can use on your blog.
splitbrain.org is has a lot going for it in terms of longevity with a rich mix of content. The dark theme isn’t my favorite look but that’s really a personal preference. Adsense should be closely evaluated and monitored to insure that it was profitable to keep it and that the level of social traffic doesn’t lead to ’smart pricing’.
