Nada Surf - Popular
I wasn’t planning on doing anymore video music posts but a few blog posts I saw today, like this one, Advertising on John Chows Entrecard Widget, and this one, How I Received 850 Visitors Without Using Social Media Sites, reminded me of this song and video: Popular by Nada Surf. The song is a sarcastic look at high school popularity with the spoken words coming from a 1964 advice book. Since Rhino Entertainment has been nice enough to put the video online and embeddable on YouTube, I couldn’t resist.
First of all, hats off to Rhino for putting it online legit. I’ve been impressed by the way the ’suits’ at Rhino do things, even though they’re under Warner Brothers these days. Make they can beat some sense into the other execs in the corporation and drag them into this century.
Nada Surf is a alternative/indie band that my wife likes so I get to hear them often when she’s driving. They weren’t one of my favorites at first but they kind of grew on me eventually.
Nada Surf’s members are Matthew Caws on guitar and lead vocals, Ira Elliot on drums and backup vocals and Daniel Lorca on bass and backup vocals. The band has had a rough time over the years with the stardom from Popular in 1996 followed by label troubles with Electra and then going the indie route in the 00’s. They’re really rock survivors, having outlasted many of their 90’s compatriots and fitting in well with newer alternative bands. Check out their web site and give some of their other songs and videos a listen as well. If you like alternative rock you’ll probably like them.
