Living in a Van Down By the River
Here’s another famous Saturday Night Live skit from Hulu featuring Chris Farley as the dysfunctional motivational speaker Matt Foley.
Also starring in the clip from May 8, 1993 are Christina Applegate, David Spade, Phil Hartman and Julia Sweeney (I think that’s who plays the mom).
Farley performed as Matt Foley on 8 separate occasions on Saturday Night Live. This clip is of the first appearance of the overweight, cynical and negative motivational speaker.
Chris Farley and David Spade had started work on a movie version of Matt Foley, but, sadly, Farley died of a drug overdose in late 1997 before the project could get off the ground. Tragedy also struck fellow cast member Phil Hartman in 1998 when he was murdered by his wife.
So are you gonna end up eating a steady diet of government cheese and living in a van down by the river? 
It is so sad when talented and successful movie stars die from drug overdoses. They have so much to live for and they die senselessly. It is very sad.
I’ll be living in a van down by the river before I’ll take even a bite of government cheese.
Farley was so talented. I first saw this clip right after Dick Martin from Laugh-In died, so I stayed up til 3 a.m. watching old Laugh-In skits. They’re hilarious and not all that dated considering they date back to the late 1960s. SNL owes a lot to them.
