Blog Review: I Hope Matt Chokes

UPDATE 2/14/2009: This domain appears to be expired.

Ryan Tindall requested a Free Blog Review of his blog, I Hope Matt Chokes

So here it is…

What is I Hope Matt Chokes?

Blog Review: I Hope Matt Chokes

Oops, first off there’s no About page so we don’t know why Ryan hopes Matt chokes. It sounds like it would be an interesting story. My first recommendation is to put together an about page that briefly tells the story of the blog.

Site Design/Theme

The blog is WordPress and use a nice looking 2 column theme by Justin Winslow with the sidebar on the right.

Navigation is very lacking on the blog. The only navigation provided is the calendar widget. Another problem is that Ryan doesn’t seem to use categories, everything is uncategorized. I’d suggest that Ryan take a look at how his theme’s author has the navigation set out in almost the same theme on their site.

The one WordPress widget he does have is the almost useless Meta widget. Get rid of it, it’s not needed. Instead, get a RSS feed widget and get the feed in FeedBurner.

Of course, I strongly recommend dumping the very useless spamvertising BlogRush widget and replace it with EntreCard. (UPDATE: EntreCard is useless too)

There is no monetization on the site. If he sticks with the gaming/music niche Adsense should do well plus there a several affiliate offer options available as well should he want to go that route.

Content

A lot of the content is reworking of news articles from the gaming and music industry. This can work but a personal touch is needed when rewriting the copy. That’s what sets apart a news site and a blog. He’s trying but most of the gaming and music articles fall just a bit short. However, one standout in this category is his review of  The Killers - Sawdust album.

While he doesn’t have an About page, Ryan does discuss his thoughts about his blog here: New Beginnings.

There’s also this post, A Letter Home, where he stretches some as a writer.

I also noticed his posting schedule was kind of erratic. This is understandable if he’s getting started in college. I’d recommend finding a consistent posting schedule that works for him so that he can keep the site interesting.

Overall

“I Hope Matt Chokes” has some potential. The first order of business is to write an About page and setup better navigation. Next, keep working on improving the content. I can see some improvement between the older and newer post so Ryan is headed in the right direction. He might also want to consider some forms of monetization if that’s something he wants to do.
