Good Cop, Bad Cop
You’ve probably seen this video clip before, where a driver goes nuts swearing at trooper Steven Murray. It’s funny but it’s also an example of how a police officer maintains their professional bearing in the face of an almost surreal situation.
This was filmed in 1992, before regular deployment of tasers and the increasing trend toward militarization of the police force in the United States.
In contrast, watch this 2007 video of a man who had the audacity to mildly disagree with the officer who pulled him over.
In this video Utah trooper John Gardner is the one who looses control and tasers a man who disagreed with him and went on to threaten the man’s pregnant wife and followed up by joking about the incident with other officers. He obviously has no business working in law enforcement in any capacity. The Utah State Patrol should dismiss this thug with a badge before he causes any more harm to the public and to the state of Utah’s and the United State’s reputation.
While it is obvious that police officers should be obeyed and respected it is also true that the police officers themselves must also respect the public they protect and serve. They should not be allowed pull a weapon, lethal or non-lethal, over a petty, non-violent, disagreement as happened in this situation.

I suppose they can taser just about anyone they please now, with the Homeland Security Act firmly in place.

But, to the point…
Militarization of the police has been going on since Bush Sr. was in office, for example, at Ruby Ridge and Waco. However, was mostly at the federal level until after 9/11. Homeland Security started throwing money around and local and state police agencies ate up this new funding and spent it on para-military training and weaponry. The second video is an example of this training, treat every member of the public like an IED wielding terrorist.
Police and military are two different things. Trying to make soldiers into cops doesn’t work in Iraq and trying to make police into soldiers doesn’t work in Utah.
