Blog Review: MoneyMoose
MoneyMoose requested a Free Blog Review of their blog, MoneyMoose and here it is…
What is MoneyMoose?
According to the About page, MoneyMoose is a team authored blog. They say that they’re a “serious financial site” and not a parody site but, a single glance proves that this isn’t true. They’re actually a financial humor and satire site with a little bit of serious finance info that sneaks in occasionally.
Site Design/Theme
MoneyMoose uses a slightly modified version of the WordPress default Kubrick theme, functional, but very plain. My main recommendation would be to find a new theme that did a better job of branding their site and making navigation easier. I think a clean, two column, theme with additional navigation options and a fluid width would work well on their site. Of course, by not having a sidebar this could make them more Digg and StumbleUpon friendly, however, there a several one column themes that would still do this and look less generic and more eye catching.
As I noted, navigation is lacking on MoneyMoose, mainly due to the lack of a sidebar on individual posts. In addition to a better theme, I’d recommend adding a plugins for related or random posts. This would help make the site more sticky.
Monetization consists of a single Google Adsense block at the top of each page. Are they leaving money at the table or are they actually cleaning up by insuring a limited number of well placed of ads? Only they and Google can answer that.
Content
There are several humorous posts throughout the blog. Here are a few I enjoyed:
The Generic Splash Advertising Page tells you how to create your very one advertising page that you see selling every eBook known to mankind.
Reality Shows Are Serious Business gave me a laugh because I have a friend who’s really desperate to get on Survivor or Big Brother.
They’re doing a cartoon series right now called Frugal Living EXTREME! that’s pretty funny.
Lastly, there’s this one, China’s Exports Soar Despite Contaminated Products, that explains why Chinese imports grow and grow in a simple chart.
Overall
The content of the site really works well from humor and satire perspective. I’d only recommend that they find a less generic theme that meets their site goals, improves navigation and makes it stand out better.
