The WordPress Plugins I Use on OpTempo

JoeM sent me an email asking which WordPress plugins I’m using on this site. Here they are:

Akismet - This is the spam prevention plugin for WordPress. Don’t blog without it.

All in One SEO Pack - This plugin, when used correctly, will help Google find your blog. You should not be without this one.

Audio player - If you want to include audio in your posts this plugin will help you do it. I haven’t used it in a post yet but I probably will soon.

Brian’s Threaded Comments - I like threaded comments since makes it easier to build conversations in comments. While it works great here I have ran into problems using it on other blogs due to theme style sheet conflicts. If you try it on your blog make sure you test it with your theme and can rollback if it doesn’t work right.

Contact Form ][ - It makes implementing a simple contact form easy. There are more feature rich ones around but this one works great for my needs.

Dagon Design Sitemap Generator - Another plugin I consider a key to a well designed site. It makes your content easy to find for visitors and builds internal SEO for your site.

FeedBurner FeedSmith - Another essential if you’re using FeedBurner for your RSS feeds.

No WWW - This one redirects www addresses to non-www addresses. It’s important for SEO purposes to do this one way or the other.

Page Redirect - This plugin inserts a PHP redirect into a WordPress page so that you can have it redirect anywhere you like. This is another one I’m not currently using but that I may in the future.

Random Posts - I had mentioned this plugin in this earlier post, Random Post Plugin From Goldfries Installed. It presents a random set of links to articles.

Sociable - I use this plugin to add social bookmarking icons at the end of each post. I did modify the PHP to add nofollow to these links and a couple of tiny cosmetic things, but if you don’t want to do this yourself, try this alternative from Andy Beard

Sphere Related Content - This plugin shows a popup AJAX widget with a list of related blog posts and news articles for the article they’re attached to. I mentioned more about it in this post: Review: The Sphere Related Content Widget

Viper’s Video Quicktags - I use this plugin to easily embed YouTube videos.

WordPress.com Stats - If you want to track your blog’s performance, this plugin is another necessity.

Do you have any thoughts on these plugins. Are there any you recommend as essential or nice to have plugins? Leave me a comment and let me know.

Great blog! What a joy to read well-written posts with good grammar and correctly-spelled words.

And this has been a helpful post, thanks.

However, your pages seem to have a layout problem.

For this page, e.g., the column of widgets from TopSpots to Blog Rankings are below the Archives listings, but hugging the left side of the screen and superimposed over the left sidebar separator line.

There are large expanses of empty space below the Comment box.

I find that about half the blogs I visit, including several top blogs, have this kind of jumbled layout.

My browser is IE6. That’s partly the cause, I think. But I don’t want to change my browser just to correct this problem.

I suspect the main cause is the sizes, widths specifically, of some of the widgets. Too wide a widget, and the whole column wraps.

You probably need to tweak some of the configurations in the style sheet.

Regards.

Hi LPF

Thanks for stopping by.

The site renders fine in IE7 and Firefox 2.0. I’ll have to check it again in IE6. It did render OK in IE6 when I first started the site but I’ve added a few things since then. Perhaps the TopSpot widget broke it.

I would recommend upgrading to either IE7 or Firefox though. IE6 has several rendering issues and security issues that aren’t present in newer browsers.

You’re welcome, Frank.

It looks much better now. No more wrapping.

Yes, I suppose it’s high time for me to change to IE7.

Cheers!

I stretched out the inner content area on the CSS and that seems to have taken care of it. I had to run my son off his computer (my old one) that still has IE6 installed to do some testing.

Hi Frank,

It’s always neat to see what plugins a good blog uses. kinda like checking what’s under the hood of a nice car. I would like to emphasize the importance of All in One SEO and related comments. If there are any new bloggers here, these two are where you should start if you want to eventually rank. They are both easy to use, I have never had any trouble with these plugins. I also use the same Comment Form, couldn’t be easier to use. Plugins are one of the reasons I absolutely love working with wordpress. I used to build regular old websites back in the mid-nineties, I think I may resume that work but solely build Wordpress sites.

Hi Coffee,

Of the ones listed above I’m still using Akismet, All-in-One SEO, Brian’s Threaded Comments, Contact Form ][, Dagon Design Sitemap Generator, No WWW, Page Redirect, Random Posts, Viper’s Video Quicktags and WordPress.com Stats. I’ve also added Random Blogroll, from the same author as Random Posts, and Ad Rotator.
