BMovies.com - Watch Old Movies for Free

Update 2/22/09: It looks like this site is inactive now but I’m not sure why. Their message boards are covered with ugly spam and it appears unmaintained. One alternative for old movie fans in the US is Hulu but the selection isn’t that extensive. It seems that a lot of the other old movie sites out there have gone to a monthly membership fee model.

I’m a fan of old sci-fi, western and kung-fu movies but they’re hard to find these days on broadcast TV. It’s much easier and profitable for them to run an infomercial with some past their prime celebrity hawking weight loss products or get rich schemes. Cable or dish isn’t much better. Into this void steps BMovies.com.

BMovies.com

BMovies shows an array of classic horror, kung fu, sci-fi and western movies, the kind of movies that were the stock and trade of drive-in theatres in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. Most of these movies are long forgotten and feature actors that never made the mainstream. There are some exceptions like McLintock starring John Wayne and some of Bruce Lee’s early Chinese films.

The player interface is just OK and the quality is rather low, but what do you want for free.

So far as advertising goes this is minimal on the site. They say that ads will play before the movie but I didn’t see any. Maybe their ad server was down at the time or something.

If you like old, cheesy, movies and like watching the whole thing and not a short clip on YouTube, check out BMovies.com

Have you tried it? What did you think?

Bmovies.com has been shut down for months now. It was a favourite site of mine. I wonder what is happening. Could you find out for me please. Many thanks

Hi Hassam,

I haven’t checked their site recently since I’ve been busy with a number of different things. Perhaps they ran into some licensing or money issues.

Right now I watch movies online at Hulu.com but that’s only available in the US. I’ll do some checking around and post some other alternatives if I can find any.
