Site Review: SmallFishBigMoney.Com

UPDATE: This site is no longer around

Fabian of SmallFishBigMoney.Com asked me to do a review of his site, so here it is…

What is SmallFishBigMoney.Com ?

SmallFishBigMoney.com

The About page of the site is quite good and explains who Fabian is and his goals for the site. He says this about the kind of sites he likes:

Fabien likes quality blogs and websites where the owners have really taken their time to design the blog and not plastered 20 million ads all over to make it look like a flea market (even they are more organized than some blogs I have seen…)

Well, he should love OpTempo since it’s like a flea market by design. :)

Let’s take a look at his site.

Site Design/Theme

SmallFishBigMoney uses the Modernpaper theme created by Performancing. This is a very sedate but well designed 3 column theme. There is a lack of personal touches that I would like to see, such as a logo or something along those lines.

As is his stated preference the advertising is also rather low key. He does offer a $10 a month tag ad which is nice but I’d suggest taking PayPal or something other than Western Union for payment. He’s also running John Chow’s TTZ Media ads, AdBrite text ads and an ad for a ebook and these are well blended as well. He practices what he preaches.

Content

SmallFishBigMoney is a new blog but Fabian has been diligent about posting new content so it’s not barren territory like some new blogs. In addition to his regular posts he has several page articles. While he’s still quite young, these articles reveal that he seems to know a lot about money. Most young men his age can blow $500 in a single night of partying.

His regular posts are good. I particularly like this one,  Blog Monetization: Why Google AdSense Works for Niche.

So, should you go niche? Niche content websites are what some people find a blessing, they stick it up, it’s a static html page, yet it gets so many visitors…why? This is because the creator has targeted the niche content website for one type of customer and one type of information. The customers and the information are linked, if you choose something like ‘Grandma’s Home Cooking Recipes’, you are likely to get mums who are at home looking for a particular recipe (do they know about AdSense…no they do not, so you got their click and so many others)

He really understands this concept pretty well and he’s right, such sites can be decent money makers.  You can tell from his other posts he’s not a fan of a lot of ads on a site, such as I have here. That’s good advice for the most part although I do think there are times to try things outside the norm.
