One Day Old and Already Scraped and Spammed

Well, this is pretty cool, or not, depending on how you look at it. My first official post on OpTempo went live at 9:33:43 am today. By this evening I’ve already had my feed scraped by 5 splogs and a half-dozen attempts at comment spam that were blocked by Akismet. A now defunct blog that has been in operation since May hasn’t gotten that many yet. I guess I’ve learned something about SEO and blog promotion.

I guess I don’t care that it was scraped in the case since they were kind enough only to post a partial article and link back here. In that case it isn’t too different from blockquoting a bit of a news article for a post, except only a program is doing it, not a person. A whole article scrape without attribution would be be annoying though. This, of course, could have already happened and I don’t know it yet.

The spam is annoying since it’s usually promoting something vile or useless. It’s easy to understand why so many bloggers turn off comments or resort to troublesome captchas. Akismet is working for me now but I may want to add a second line of defense at some point.

Anyway, what are your thoughts of attributed scrapping? Good? Bad? Indifferent? Let me know by leaving a comment.

Hi Frank,

Congratulations on getting scraped!

I use Google Alerts for articles but I’m a bit clueless as to what you need to use to check your posts aren’t taken.

What do you use?

Hi Jim,

I usually do Google searches on certain phrases I commonly use in my writing along with links to my sites. Also, many of the new sploggers pingback to your site so they’re easy to find.

Copyscape provides several tools that can help with the process. They aren’t 100% accurate but they’re usually good enough. It can make the process easier for you.

Are you saying that inexperienced sploggers forget to remove pingback capabilities and so are found out due to their own negligence? I find it amazing this happened on the very first day of your blog.
