10 Things You Can Do To Uncomplicate Your Life
1. Divide a Large Project Into Manageable Chunks
Don’t stress yourself trying to do everything at once. Instead break-up your tasks into mini-milestones. For example, cleaning your whole house might seem overwhelming but one room isn’t quite as intimidating. Also, reward yourself after accomplishing a mini-milestone, even if it’s something small and simple.
2. Ask Others For Advice
Don’t be afraid to ask other people for advice when something is troubling you. Often others can provide you with insights that you’re not seeing or are unwilling to see. If you need professional advice, don’t put off seeking it. Doing so will only cause you more stress and complications.
3. Learn to Let Go
Move on from problems that are not within your power to solve. As the Serenity Prayer says, “God, give us grace to accept with serenity the things that cannot be changed, courage to change the things that should be changed, and the wisdom to distinguish the one from the other.”
4. Hire Someone To Do It For You
If you find yourself putting off something you hate doing or don’t know how to do, find and hire someone to do it for you. For example, I hate mowing the lawn and, I will put off doing it until I absolutely have to do it. To avoid this kind of stress, I hire someone to mow and I don’t worry about it anymore.
5. Keep a Schedule
How often do you find yourself running around like mad trying to handle something you forgot to do? You can avoid this complication by keeping a calendar of events so that you can know at a glance what you have to do. How you keep it isn’t important. I prefer a paper calendar since it’s easier to share with family members but something computer based would work too.
6. Practice Preventive Maintenance
How often do you encounter problems when something breaks unexpectedly or you get sick? Avoid this complication by making the effort to insure that your vehicles and other equipment receive regular preventive care. Also, schedule some regular medical check-ups for yourself so you won’t be blindsided by problems either.
7. Re-evaluate Your Possessions
If you find yourself taking care of and trying to fit in more and more stuff take the time to evaluate just exactly what you need. For example, do you really need 3 different kinds of toasters and 4 different types of coffee makers cluttering your kitchen? What could you get rid of an not even notice it? Go through and find the stuff you don’t need or use and sell it or donate it.
8. Organize Your Stuff
Think about where and when you use things and then locate that item there. Place items that relate to each other together. For example, you might want to keep office supplies in a drawer or cabinet near your home office desk. Don’t let items you use often get scattered all over the house where you can’t find them. Keep things together so you’ll never have to say, “Where did I put that?”
9. Rent Rather Than Buy
Sometimes it makes sense to rent something rather than buying it. Not only might you save money but you’ll save yourself stress as well. For example, a friend of mine has a nice boat but he is constantly having to deal with keeping it stored properly, paying insurance, paying fees, and so forth that it takes a lot of the enjoyment out of it. If I want to go boating, I’ll rent. This limits some of my options so it is a trade-off but it does keep complications out of my life. Consider what you could rent vs. what you could buy and see how this breaks down for you.
10. Prioritize People In You Life
This is a tough one. Sometimes we have friends or relatives that make our life complicated. Sometimes we find ourselves spending time with associates that we don’t like or don’t care about at the expense of time with people we do care about. You don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings or hurt yourself politically on a job but sometimes you just have to say “NO”. Make sure that you have your priorities right and work on improving your communication skills so that you can more easily spread yourself about.
